Carter b.l792 d. l852 b.l792 d.l852 ------- Adamson family descended from Caroline Carter was a second cousin to Benjamin Harrison, "The Signer,"; third and fifth cousin to the Harrison Presidents. Fifth cousin to Robert E. Lee; niece of Reverend Charles Carter, Archbishop of Phil.. Caroline and Raphael had five children. I recall one of the great grandmothers died while giving birth to a daughter. The daughter was raised with the First Archbishop of the USA John Carroll. Their son was -- John Fitz Allen, Lord Maltravers, who was lost at sea. He left a daughter, Lady Joan Fitz Allen, who married Sir William Echyingham and died in l4l3. Their son -- Sir Thomas Echyingham, who died in l44l. His daughter -- Lady Margaret, who married, William Blount, eldest son of Sir Walter le Blount, Treasurer of Calais. Margaret and William Blount, Their son -- Lord Montjoy in l461. He married,Lady Anne Neville who was also of Royal descent from Edward II. Their daughter was -- Elizabeth Blount, who married Sir Andrew, Baron of Wyndsore, a lineal descendant of Edward II, and Elizabeth Plantaganet. Their daughter was -- Lady Edith Wyndsore, who married George Ludlow, of Hill Deverill, and their son was -- Thomas Ludlow, of Dihton, who died in l607. He married Jane, daughter of Thomas Pyle. Their son was -- Gabriel Ludlow, who was born in l587, he married Phillis, their daughter was -- Sarah Ludlow, who died in l668. Sarah became fourth wife of John Carter of "Cartotman,"VA. John Carter, married in l723, Elizabeth Hill, daughter of Col. Edward Hill of "Shirley," Charles City County, VA. Elizabeth inherited the estate of her father and it became know as the Carter estate. Elizabeth Hill Carter married William Byrd III, of Westover, VA.. They had -- Thomas Taylor Byrd, married Mary Ann, daughter of Maria Carter and William Armistead, of "Hesse," Gloucester Co.
CARTERS OF VIRGINIA Col. John Carter of England and VIrginia, was the son of The Honorable William Carter of Casstown, Hereford County, England, and the Middle Temple. Colonel John was born in England in 1620 and died in l669 at "Cartoman," his home in Lancaster County, Virginia. He lived first in Lower Norfolk, in l649, and represented that county in the House of Burgesses. Later he moved to Lancaster County, Virginia, and built his home, "Cartoman," near the Cartoman River. He served as a Burgess from Lancaster County, where Christ Church stood later. This church is considered the finest example of pure Colonial church architecture in America today. |
